[HPADM] SUMMARY: HP-UX Public Domain software

Hi Admins,

Here is a kind of summary on the public domain software questions I raised.

Thanks to:
Dimitri Avgoustakis
David Lodge
Bill Thompson
Anand Hotchandani
Bill Hasell

I've compiled the reactions from the persons above in my summary, so any
errors are completely my doing.

The question about the location where public domain software is or should
be installed is open to debate (whats new :-)

A lot of standards (System V Application Binary Interface, Intel Binary
Compatability Standard (iBCS2), Common Operating System Environment (COSE)
and the Linux Standard Base (LSB)) use the /opt directory for add-on
software. HP-UX, being a System V flavor, follows these standards.
The BSD UNIX version(s) seem to use /usr/local location.
Although (a/the?) Linux standard defines /opt as the location to use,
allmost all Linux add-on software is installed in /usr. The HP-UX Software
and Porting Archive is leaving the HP-UX standard in favor of the Linux
practice and even some departments within HP itself are doing the same. I
won't discuss the pro's and con's of both "standards", but my guess is we
are stuck with the two locations for the time being.
The switch from /opt to /usr/local means that I've got to update the depots
on my installation server and reinstall all public domain software on the
different systems.
(David Lodge and Bill Hasell warned about the default 777 permissions on
/usr/local in HP-UX)

The question about the use of the GNU C compiler, the answers are equally
unclear :-)
It looks like HP is switching to gcc for the open source software (their
Perl 5.6.1 version is built with gcc) so I guess I'll have to install that
too.
HP is publishing open source software, including the gcc compiler on
http://www.hp.com/dspp
(the old site http://devresource.hp.com/tools/openSourceList.html is also
still available)and I found a gcc version for HP-UX 11i there.

Not much definite answers I'm afraid

Paul

P.S. I'll be posting a question on Perl 5.6.1 here shortly :-)
