Viruses getting through

We are running sendmail 8.11.0 on an AIX 5.1 box. This same box also
has procmail installed. Between the two, until a couple of weeks ago,
we had no problems. We were blocking certain types of files, .pif,
.zip, etc. and defanging others, .doc, etc. For the last couple of
weeks once in a while but not very often, a zip file or pif file or some
other forbidden type will get through or a .doc will go through
un-defanged. These usually (but I cannot say for certainty always)
occur when the attachment has been mailed to a list. Does anyone have a
clue as to what might be happening?

TIA
