Big thanks to Mr. Ryals for the tip, worked like a charm - downloaded
bos.net.nfs.client 5.2.0.16 and associated requisites, and it works
great :)

Subject: Re: Problems with automounter between AIX5.2 and 4.3.3

We have worked with many automout issues on AIX 5.1 and 5.2 with IBM.
The latest 5.2 fix seems to work (I don't have the APAR number handy)
but look for bos.net.nfs.client at 5.2.0.16 and select your ML for 1 or
less and it will provide some requisites that will be handy and are
above ML2 (even though if you are at ML2 and select ML 2 as your level
in
fix central it will only display the bos.net.nfs.client fileset) This
also will fix the issue of automounts getting mounted as autofs and nfs
but the autofs's not auto-unmounting. The 5.1 fix is not yet out and we
will be testing with it once it is released. There is also a mtime bug
that you may want to address at the same time (again I don't have the
APAR number handy) but it is bos.rte.commands5.2.0.14 and the behavior
is back to 4.3.3 behavior even though it uses the new specification for
calculating mtime/atime

/foo, and even /foo/bar... but not /foo/bar/bar2.0. I can see the
higher level directories, but once I get to a certain level, I no longer
see anything in the directory listing. Any and all AIX 4.3 hosts can
see the files and directories there just fine, all the way down the
path.

but I'd really rather prefer to run the automounter on 5.2 using src.
