For gigabit cards autonegotiate appears to be mandatory.
The following comment appears in IBM docs: "As per the IEEE 802.3z
specification, gigabit speeds of any duplexity must be auto-negotiated for
copper (TX) based adapters. Please select auto-negotiation if these speeds
are desired."
