If your using Samba, that is about the only way, unless you get FastConnect
from IBM. I think FastConnect is the name. Any ways, it's an IBM SMB
protocol software, like what Samba is. Microsoft also sells Services for
Unix which has NFS/NIS support.

What simpler way do you envision, or better yet, what are you REALLY trying
to do?
