You can use "expect"

Wierd question, but I am trying to write a quick script that will run an
application, update one screen of info and then exit. The problem is that
I need to pass the current date and use both the F1 and F4 keys in doing
the changes.

Can I pass variables into a here document in my script? and is it possible
to use an escape sequence to simulate the F1 and F4 keys?

Some DBA asked me if we could do this and now my brain is bound and
determined to figure out how.
