you are correct, i meant a gzipped tarball. i misspoke. trying to do too many things at once :)

That won't work. FTP will change the permissions of the gzip file and when
you ungzip it the permissions will not revert back. Create a tar-ball of
the files and gzip that, or just send the tar-ball. When you untar the
permissions will be preserved (you can also send special files using this
method).
