SSA_DEVICE_ERROR ... "device reset"

What does it mean that the SSA adapter sent a "device reset" message to a
particular disk? Is this normal or if it happens on a weekly basis an
indicator that something is starting to go bad? The 'internal maintenance'
I understand to be on the order of the disk managing its own sector
retirement and so forth, but this is the adapter telling the disk to
'straighten up,' isn't it?

Many thanks and sorry for the long disclaimer.
