Bruce-

My understanding is that the battery is used to protect the fast write cache on the SSA card. That way the card can store data and then write out that data to disk in larger chunks at a time for improved performance. [The write is reported to the OS as complete as soon as data is written to the cache on the SSA card- and the actual write to disk happens later.] If the battery goes bad, the SSA card will still work, but the fast write cache will be turned off.

Subject: SSA Cache Battery Question
A question for you all ...
The SSA Cache Battery on our system says it wants to be replaced ... is this
battery used all the time, or is it just used in case of power fluctuations?
We're trying to understand this. Is the use of this battery similar to the
clock battery in a PC ... if it ain't there, it don't work right?
Just trying to understand, and sorry as always for the huge disclaimer at
the end ... thanks in advance to all who reply!
