Sorry about that - I was at home and nowhere near an AIX box; tried it
on a FreeBSD 4.7 platform, where it works just fine thanks:
augly:/u0/home/rwa > mail -s "test" "<dummy rwa>" < /etc/group
augly:/u0/home/rwa > <dummy rwa>... User unknown
/u0/home/rwa/dead.letter... Saved message in /u0/home/rwa/dead.letter
Of course, my error was parsing it as a sendmail question rather than
an AIX question, coupled with a naive faith in standards as written;
c.f. RFC2822 section A.5. AIX clearly isn't *nix in this particular
context, and it was foolish of me to generalize.
