Hallo Frank,
aix sendet pings, um zu schauen, welche maximale Paketgrösse alle Router auf dem Weg zum anderen Node (auf dem "path") vertragen.
Wird gemacht, damit keine zu grossen Pakete geschickt werden, die dann unterwegs fragmentiert werden müssen.
Wenn Du das welche-paketgrösse-auf-dem-weg ( path_maximal-transmission-unit ) - discovery abschaltest, kommen auch keine pings mehr.
Aber ggf. kriegen die Router zwischendrin mehr Last, weil sie fragmentieren müssen.

I think it's
/usr/sbin/no -o tcp_pmtu_discover=0
/usr/sbin/no -o udp_pmtu_discover=0
I would venture to say that you can savely give it a try (and then have a look with iptrace / ipreport for icmp packets)
