Re: Decommissioning some SSA disks

Bill,

It looks like you can use the command "ssa_progress -l <pdisk>" to check
the status of a formatting disk. I've not used it, but according to the
SSA doc it "shows how much (by percentage) of a format operation has
been completed, and to show the status of the format operation. The
status can be "Complete", "Formatting", or "Failed". It provides output
like "Formatting 30" (for 30% complete), "Complete 100", etc.

Wish I had practical experience to offer, but this looks like it'll fit
the bill (no pun intended).

:-)

James,

I tried the ssa_format command before, but it didn't seem to do anything
(I
got a prompt back in less than one second).

I tried it again just now and got the same response however I
immediately
ran it again on the same disk (which I hadn't done before) and got the
following message:

ssa_format: pdisk5 is being formatted.

Does this mean it formats the drive in the background? How do I know
when
it's done? Will this be enough to effectively remove the data on the
disk
(e.g.: can no longer perform an importvg)

I don't have any documentation for the command so any input will be
appreciated.

Thanks,
