SMBFS failes on AIX 5.2 with 64 bit kernl

While installing the bos.cifs_fs.rte on AIX 5.2 booted with the 64 bit
kernel, I get this

Method error (/etc/methods/cfgnsmb):
         0514-038 Error loading kernel extension.

instal: Failed while executing the bos.cifs_fs.rte.config script.

0503-464 installp: The installation has FAILED for the "root" part
         of the following filesets:
         bos.cifs_fs.rte 5.2.0.0

...

Doing a google search returns on bos.cifs_fs.rte + kernel + extensions returns

64-bit Kernel

SMBFS of AIX 5L Version 5.2 is not supported with 64-bit kernel and
installation of bos.cifs_fs.rte fails with the 64-bit kernel.

Is there a fix for this problem without having to boot the 32bit kernel?
