I wholeheartedly agree. Unfortunately, the last couple of places i've been,
i don't have control over the switches and the networking folks (rightly so)
see autonegotiation as less work for them. Having said that, i think it's
worth the effort, if you can, to specify EVERYTHING. that way there are
fewer "surprises". auto seems to work best when the nic and the switch are
from the same vendor...imagine that.

Just to throw in my $0.02. I NEVER use auto-negotiation on my switches or
NICs. I've been bitten by it more than once. I specify everything whenever
possible.

i had a similar situation, turned out my ethernet card was
set to 100 full,
but the switch port was autodetect. Setting the card to
also be autodetect
fixed it. check both the server and pc and make sure the
cards agree with
                the switch ports.

I have a strange problem. We have a pSeries RS6000 running
AIX 5.1.
Ftp works fine between this box and any other RS6000.
However, when you
ftp from a PC using dos or any other form of ftp, it does
the ftp but
takes way too long. When ftping from the RS6000 to that
same PC, it
works as quickly as one would expect. I'm talking
significant times.
                For instance:

PC to RS6000 transfer of 1004750 bytes takes 59.1
seconds
RS6000 to PC transfer of 1004750 bytes takes 1.2
seconds

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA.
