Re: End of support for AIX 5.1 in April 2004

I feel your pain Simon. I am currently working on upgrading 50+ servers from aix433 to 5.1 including some SP nodes. We thought about going to 5.2 directly because of the April 2003 EOS date for 5.1L, but found that it was too much of a jump for our applications. It is a task and a half to get some of our applications up to 5.1, never mind 5.2
The only consolation in this regard is that the jump from 5.1L to 5.2 is smaller and should be less painfully than going from 4.3.3 to 5.1. So we envisage that although quite soon after we upgrade our last server from 4.3.3 to 5.1 we will start planning the 5.2 upgrades, the process should be less painful.
I am quite suprised that 5.1 EOS date is so close to 4.3.3 EOS, a bad judgement on behalf of IBM imho. Perhaps if enough customers complain to IBM they may extend the 5.1 EOS date, we can at least hope right!

We've got a project underway to upgrade from 433 to 5L, but I was expecting
that most of the servers would initially go to 5.1. It's going to be hard
enough to do that; going straight to 5.2 would be a serious problem.

Not the upgrade itself, but compatibility of applications, (and getting
vendors to give a straight answer!).

Does anybody else have a view on this? Where can I direct my complaint?

How many people are still on 4.3.3? Do you intend to jump straight to 5.2
this year?

What about people who have recently upgraded to 5.1. Do you plan to go to
5.2 in the next year?
