we've revised our upcoming HR project due to Oracle licensing prices to be
Linux/Oracle.

originally, we spec'd an oracle database and oracle HR app on an AIX-p660
box.

Due to Oracle pricing incentives and the new IBM 440 boxes - we're now
spec'ing the system on Oracle 9i RAC and a Redhat Cluster of IBM - x440
boxes.

Oracle said that even though the oracle price would go up due to more
processors in a cluster and that the Intel chips are priced the same as RISC
chips now - that the price drop in hardware would makeup the difference.
(Our director swallowed that hook-line-and-sinker... We're swimming in
Oracle blood now... After a conference call the other day - we become a
showplace for Oracle - 1 of 25 installed LinuxCluster/Oracle 9iRAC
installations and the first in Healthcare...)

I'm the only one in our department that's a unix guy. (AIX-FreeBSD) We
have to educate four others plus myself - from the ground up to linux
clustering in under 4 months...

<rude> thanks alot, mr. ellison... </rude>

fyi,
troy

Subject: Linux and Oracle

Is anyone out there running Linux/Oracle in production or testing to move
in that direction ? What is your experience - good /bad ??
Dell Dude (Wintel marketing guy ) was telling us that there are companies
running linux and Oracle on Intel platform in production and they replaced
RS/6000`s and sun hardware with Intel hardware - Hard to believe .
Our Company is thinking to move some of the RS/6000 servers(SP nodes -
WInterhawks) on Intel based red hat enterprise linux servers to save $$ .

Thank You

SD
