Try a telnet to the smart relay's port 25. Try via hosthame and IP address.
Try it from one of your other AIX hosts too.

On our AIX box with AIX4.3.3ML10 all mail-related command take about 60 sec.
to get response. We are not using DNS but I have created /etc/netsvc.conf
file with hosts=local as the only entry.
The sendmail.cf is also changed such as all mail is redirected to a "Smart"
mail relay. Information about mail-relay is also in the /etc/hosts file.
root:/etc # time mailq
The mail queue is empty.
real 1m0,02s
user 0m0,01s
sys 0m0,01s
The same configuration is made on other AIX box without any problem. Both
servers has same level of AIX and sendmail!!!
Do you have any idea what could be the problem?
