Re: Using the two ports on an IBM 3153 terminal

Perhaps I am recalling wrong, but I thought there was an option for that.
I may be confusing it with what Bruce was referring to. I just recall
there were several different combinations for the port configurations.

Bruce: The session is configured correctly -- EIA/None.

Bill: I'm fairly familiar with the setup menus, but I didn't realize
there
was an option to change the electrical charactersistics (ie, 422 vs 232)
of
the EIA port. Where is this at specifically?

Thanks,
Eric

If you can change it, make sure your setup F1 "quick" menu shows
Host/Printer as being EIA/Para, and not Aux/EIA or anything else. This
way,
your attached printer (if desired) won't interfere with either serial
port.

Ctrl-<numeric "-"> will put you into the terminal setup where you can
change
that.

Argh, it seems that perhaps my terminal only supports RS-422 on the "EIA"
port (or is that EIA-422?).

If I do a CTRL-<left arrow> to get to the application menu, then choose
the
diag option, the EIA port is listed as 422 while the AUX port is listed as
232.

The manual for the 3153 is misleading. It says that the EIA port is 232
but
optionally also has 422 on the appropriate pins (meaning that the one
connector can speak both "protocols"). This doesn't seem to be the case
in
my situation.

Thanks to all who responded.

Have you toggled the amount of sessions to 2?

I have an IBM 3153 that I'm trying to use as a serial console for two
headless machines. The 3153 has an "AUX" and an "EIA" port. According to
its manual, one is DTE, one is DCE, but you can supposedly use both for
serial terminals (one just needs a null modem adapter, the other doesn't).

Well, I have one machine working on the AUX port with a null modem
adapter.
The other port, no matter what I try, just doesn't seem to do anything. At
this

point, I don't suspect the terminal itself, I'm still thinking it's an
RS-232 issue.

Any ideas??

Eric
