Just another quick observation...

I wouldn't recommend this for everyone, but even if you can access the
system and start removing processes it can take quite a long while; both
because of the amount of work to do and the slow response you'll have to
endure. It may be quicker and simpler just to reboot the machine. I
wouldn't want to do that to something running a proper DBMS, but for other
applications it's worth considering.

I spent about two hours tidying up one of our systems at the end of last
year. By rebooting the system I could have had it up and running in 30
minutes.
