rdist and excluding files and directories

How can I exclude certain files and directories from being updated via
rdist.

I want to do this in the command line (uisng -d) rather than in a
distribution file

rdist -c -d EXLIB = (file directory) localfile host:remotefile
.................

does not seem to work
