Try this:
sendmail -bt -d0.1
The version should be the first line of output. Then exit with a control d.

1) telnet <machine> 25
The sendmail banner should list the version of sendmail and the
config file.
2) strings /usr/lib/sendmail | grep [0-9] | more
The version string is somewhere in the output.
