I think it is more likely that the disk is defective. I've seen this sort
of behaviour in the past: the system recognizes that a device is present, so
you get a pdisk, but it can't be configured, so no hdisk.

You might try re-seating it; if it's been sitting idle for a while it may
have got stuck and re-seating it may be enough of a jolt to get it spinning
again.
More violent techniques are possible, but I'd be reluctant to try unless the
disk is not covered by a maintenance contract and you're prepared to junk
it.
