THanks to your responses.
I already can dial-up and log in to AIX. Modem works just fine.
I just want to use that back door to move files the easiest
way possible. I have not had time to look into Kevins advice
but will do. I've been a BBS user of old and those seem to work
fine. All I need are those old software (where to get them).

In addition to Kevins excellent advice...
1st, Do not run out and but a modem at your local electonics store
(most externals are now part WIN modems). If you are going to use a
dial in modem on a UNIX box, get something that is supported by the
manufacturer for UNIX. The manufacurer's Customer Support should be
able to supply you with the modems programable settings that they need
to see. Only buiy a modem which is "CERTIFIED by the Manufacturer FOR
UNIX". This is the voice of experience speaking from a very painfull
past. You may get lucky, but it once took me returning 10 modems to
get some of an older series that would connect. (same manufacturer
and model that we had been using - manufacturers do change firmware
from time to time)
2nd, Go to the following web site
http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/server/aix.techTips
and search for documents containing "dial modem". You will want the
document "How to Set Up a Hayes Compatible Modem". This will tell you
what AIX needs on the serial side and the cable pinouts needed. A
serial cable with a "null modem" connector should do the trick. You
will die laughing when you seed the baud rate, 9600 :-) The document
is dated, but still give you a push in the right direction.
