/tmp requirement for oracle9i

Hi All ,
We are installing Oracle9i Application Server on AIX , and it is continuously asking for space in /tmp directory .
there is TEMP variable we can set to show oracle /tmp space is somewhere
on other files systems (/d01 ,/d02 etc..)

How to set this variable ? and will it work with app server or is it only
applicable to database server installation ?
