This is an example of lspv. The first 8 characters are the systems serial
number. If the disk came from another system, and the pv is not assigned,
the pvid can end up with the previous systems serial number as the first 8
characters.

shekar-

chdev -l hdisk1 -a pv=yes
will assign a Physical Volume ID (pvid) to hdisk1.

This is from an IBM doc on replacing a disk:
"Adding a new drive to an existing volume group"
Once the new drive has been configured, ensure that a proper PVID has been
written to the drive by running:

   chdev -l <hdisk#> -a pv=clear
   chdev -l <hdisk#> -a pv=yes

I guess the disk you added had a pvid which was fine for your system to use.

Hi,
I remember once that when one of the SSA disk had failed. I
replaced it and then ran cfgmgr -vl ssar and then did a extendvg to add the
disk to the appropriate diskgroup.I did not run any other commands. But, the
IBM document says that after you add a disk and after running cfgmgr, you
will have to run chdev -l hdisk1 -a pv=yes. Is this true and if yes why...?
Thanks,
shekar
