Theresa:
We have high end boxes , S80's, S85 and p690 (Regatta), all running
several Oracle databases, ranging in size from 100 gb to 1 tb. One
system is also used to run home grown C++ and Syncsort apps which are
very CPU intensive. Since all systems have 12 or more processors , I
have rarely seen any major CPU bottlenecks except the one system with
C++ and Syncsort apps. However, on numerous occasions I noticed large
I/O waits. Data is coming out of two Sharks fiber connected via a SAN
with 2109 data switches.
I have tuned the systems with data collected from vmstat, tprof, svmon,
filemon, iostat etc and have managed to bring down I/O wait to
manageable levels.
To allow for growth I would definitely go with 6 processors and 8 gb
memory. Get as much memory as your budget allows, because as databases
grow the memory requirement grows too and remember most databases,
Oracle in particular are absolute memory hogs. I haven't worked much
with other databases, but would some care to comment on the memory usage
habits of DB2, Sybase etc.
