Top does not accurately report memory statistics, probably because it
doesn't correctly interpret the kernel information. I would strongly
recommend that you use topas, which is part of the perfagent.tools fileset.
You might also want to investigate using nmon, which is turning out to be a
pretty good freeware tool, which, by the way, was developed within IBM. You
can get nmon from the IBM eServer Develop Domain,
http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/esdd/articles/analyze_aix/. Even better, you
can also get the Nmon Analyser, which is extremely useful for generating
performance charts. The Nmon Analyser uses nmon-generated output to create
charts within Lotus 123 or Excel. Like nmon, you can get it from the
Developer Domain at
http://www1.ibm.com/servers/esdd/articles/nmon_analyser/. Lastly, there's
the venerable freeware monitor tool, but it has reporting problems of its
own, especially on AIX 5L. A monitor binary is available on the Bull
Freeware site, or you can get source code from http://www.mesa.nl.

Subject: Top - Help

Hi all;

I just downloaded and installed TOP [for AIX] on one of our SP nodes (yes,
the CPU bound one) for the Oracle DBA's to monitor their processes with.
However, I am confused as to where TOP is getting it's MEMORY information
from? This node has 4GB of physical memory and another 2GB of paging...yet
that is not being reflected. Does anyone know where TOP gets it's
information - or what these MEMORY numbers might be referring to?

Thanks in advance for the help;
Theresa

TOP DATA:

load averages: 4.08, 4.29, 3.99
