I suppose the comfort level depends on who and how many (and at what level)
have their hands in the system files. In my environment, I don't dare make
things too complex, sad to say, in crontab and elsewhere ... scripts are the
only safe location for some of these routines. With trust and competence,
however, I agree with you.

My first reaction was that I agreed with you, but I can see an advantage of
having it all in crontab. Anybody glancing through crontab can clearly see
that the command is only executing at the beginning of the month; they don't
need to know about extra processing in the script.
