Joe:
There are numerous issues here, let me try and encapusulate.

1. Did you install the device drivers? Easiest way to do it is - put
in the media (cd or tape in the drive) and issue cfgmgr -i /dev/cd0
(or /dev/rmt0 as the case may be)
2. Make sure the adapters are in available state - issue lsdev -Cc
adapter (should see something like
ent0 Available 20-60 IBM 10/100 Mbps Ethernet PCI Adapter (23100020)
3. Now define the IP address etc - smitty --> comunications -->
TCP/IP --> Min config & start
---> choose the appropriate interface eg - en0 Standard
Ethernet Network Interface <enter> then fill in approriate info, set
Start now to yes <enter>
4. Check if inetd is running - lssrc -s inetd (should see active )
inetd tcpip 6726 active

At this point you should be in business!!

I would also check other services like NFS, sendmail etc

On another note - you really need to upgrade. AIX 4.1 is badly out of
date. Shoot for at least 4.3.3 ML 8 or 10. Given your older
hardware you'll need to check the AIX <--> hardware compatibilty.

Good luck!
