Your right. It just happened so quick in the boot I thought it was hardware.
I'm now following the standard AIX 555 trouble shooting steps.

LED 555 is not specific to a RS/6000 570
According to the manual (page 23-6) this error is:
555 An ODM error occurred when trying to varyon the rootvg, or unable to
create an
NFS swap device during network boot.
