Cdrom Drive Problem

This past weekend I upgraded the firmware levels (went to WIL01269.img and
wc010611.img) on one of my servers (F50) and then proceeded to take the
operating system from AIX 4.2.1 to AIX 4.3.3. The operating system upgrade
was a migration from AIX 4.2.1 to AIX 4.3.2 and then UPDATE_ALL to AIX
4.3.3. Update CD's and maintenance level 08 was also applied. I've done
this on a number of servers without any problems. After the migration to
AIX 4.3.2 I started receiving cdrom drive errors during subsequent SMIT
UPDATE_ALL runs. The exact message was... restore: 0511-123 The volume on
/dev/cd0 is not in backup format. 0503-003 installp: The specified device
/dev/cd0 is not a valid device or file. The funny thing is, after a
reboot, the cdrom drive worked fine the first time. I would get similar
errors after the first attempt. Again, a reboot would clear up the problem
until the drive was used again. I also get the error when I try to mount
/cdrom for the first time. The first mount command takes a little longer
to complete, gives me an errpt but I'm able to issue the command again and
everything works fine. After the first error I can mount and unmount
/cdrom without errors. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? If so,
how did you correct it? Is this a hardware problem with the cdrom drive or
is it somehow related to the firmware and/or AIX 4.3.3 upgrade? Please
note that I must debug this myself since management decided we no longer
needed to pay IBM for maintenance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Listed below is the 'errpt -a' output. Thanks.
