Thanks for a number of interesting replies, below:

1. From Dr. Blinn:

I'm only guessing, but I'd not be surprised if HP has decided that there
is no benefit in having engineers do another release of the JDK for
Tru64 UNIX.

Since OpenVMS runs on Itanium and since the effort to port something
like the JDK to OpenVMS is about the same whether the target is Alpha or
Itanium and since most of the OpenVMS engineering and customer base are
still using lots of Alpha systems, I'm not surprised there's a release
for Alpha.

I would be surprised to see HP do a release for Tru64 UNIX. They really
do (in my observation) seem to want Tru64 UNIX to go away and the
customer base to move to HP-UX on Itanium (not that that's an easy task
in all cases).

If you have a good relationship with your HP account manager, you might
try to put some pressure on to get an updated JDK for Tru64 UNIX, but
frankly, I don't think that would make a difference.

2. HP's response:

I will have to look into this and get back to you.

3. Timothy Roden suggested taking a look at NetBSD's "pkgsrc":

http://www.netbsd.org/Documentation/software/packages.html#bootstrap
http://www.netbsd.org/Documentation/software/packages.html#docs

and then

ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/current/pkgsrc/lang/sun-jdk15/README.htm
l

4. Joe Fletcher suggested trying to build from the newly "open source"
Sun JDK. I had looked at this and it appears to require Windows or
Linux; if anyone has tried with better results, let me know.

The pkgsrc route seems most promising, but it's a big enough hurdle to
push this down in the queue. I'll send another summary if I hear
anything back from HP.

Hi all--

Maybe a silly question, but anyone heard anything about the availability
of JDK 1.5 for T64U? It's up for VMS on Alpha but nothing for us.

URL I've been checking:

http://h18012.www1.hp.com/java/alpha/

Thanks,
