How to remove disk from raidset on ESA12000?

We have an ESA12000 with a 6 disk raidset. One of the disks in the
raidset was pulled in from the spareset, and we'd like to pull it out
(temporarily putting raidset in reduced state) and replace with a
different disk, thus restoring spareset to original location in the
array. We are using the command:

"set r1 remove=disk60900"

The system refuses to allow us to remove the disk, saying:

"Unable to remove DISK60900 from R1"

We've tried using "set r1 replace=disk60900" but then it says the
raidset is not in a reduced state, which is correct - it is not.

Any suggestions as to why it won't let us temporarily reduce the
raidset?

We are not using any add'l software to manage it, this is a very
barebones config, just array attached to one system via fibre-channel
thru hub.

TIA...
