cannot read from serial device /dev/tty00

Hello Managers!

On an alpha server DS25, TRU64 V5.1A I am able to read from the
serial device /dev/tty00 or /dev/tty01 using "tip" and the correct
setup in configuration file /etc/remote

But, I when I try cat </dev/tty00 or cat /dev/tty00 no input.

I tried to set (as root!) the speed by
stty -f /dev/tty00 1200
and checking it:
stty -a -f /dev/tty00 is still on 9600 baud

The protection of /dev/tty00 is crw-rw-rw root system

What do I miss?

BTW, on Linux all this works perfect

Any help would be appreciated.
