UPDATED: SUMMARY: Oracle 9i RAC on Compaq Tru64 UNIX

We finally found a fix to the second instace of oracle not starting. See below. Again, thanks to all those who helped.

Here was the solution of the problem …

1. Login as the Oracle software owner and shutdown all database instances on all nodes in
the cluster.

2. cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib

3. make -f ins_rdbms.mk rac_on

If this step did not fail with fatal errors then proceed to step 4.

4.. make -f ins_rdbms.mk ioracle

Query from Oracle:-

Why these files were needed to be recompiled. When the database was working fine before shutdown the servers then what probably could have happened all
of a sudden which created this problem. Pls suggest so that we can avoid this type of problems in future.

Reply from Oracle:-

Deepender, I wonder if oracle user's profile has been setup so that oracle user's environment is
setup correctly after reboot, i.e. ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID, etc.

Secondly, either somebody or some script to relink oracle with rac_off option so that the oracle rdbms
software is without RAC option.

In summary, the problem was caused by RAC option being not installed in oracle rdbms software .
Either oracle user's ORACLE_HOME didn't point to a correct ORACLE_HOME after reboot, i.e. it pointed to
a non-RAC oracle_home, or somebody relinked oracle without rac option before reboot, or some script
was run to relink oracle without rac option during reboot.
