SUMMARY: Installing a SVGA PBXGB-AA in an AlphaSerer 800

The solution to my problem this in the manual AlphaServer 800 Users Guide,
that disabled the S3 Trio that this absorbed in the main board.

AlphaServer's 800 Users Guide Manual
If you are using other than the standard onboard VGA controller, the
onboard S3 TRIO64 VGA options must be set to disabled by grounding (GND) the
VGA jumper (J27) on the right side of the system board, and the console
environment variable set to graphics. Combining multiple VGA controllers
produces unpredictable results.

Thanks.

I found your problem in the FW Release Notes for the AS800/AS1000:

        WWW Reference:
        http://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/readmes/archive/doc/alpha1000a_v57_fw_relnote.txt

        ...............

        2.4.5.1 PBXGB-AA - Blank Screen on Tru64 Unix

The switch setting for the PBXGB-AA PowerStorm graphics card should
be set to position six (1024x768 at 72Mhz) instead of default position
zero (1280x1024 at 72Mhz). Tru64 Unix does not support (1280x1024 at 72Mhz)
on this card.

2.4.5.2 PBXGB-AA Revision F03 is not Supported on AlphaServer 800

PBXGB-AA revision FO3 is not supported on AlphaServer 800 and
Digital Server 3300 System. Support revisions are E03 or earlier for these
systems.

Did you disable the console port?

Did you set the SRM console variable to graphics? Try "show
console" at
the SRM >>> prompt. We have an AS1200, with a PB2GA-JD card. I
seem to
remember it being fussy about being in the 1st PCI slot. The AS1200
is
the same generation as the AS800, around 1997. There may be another
SRM
setting. It's been too long to remember.
