Hi,
      I think I was too sketchy on the problem . So here goes the whole story.
The workstation in question was happily running 4.0F with X enabled till I
decided to install 5.1A .
I bumped up the firmware to 7.2-1 ( the last version released) and then
installed 5.1A . X failed to start and I did the install in console mode.
I even patched the system to patch-kit 6 . But still the X mode eludes me .

The Xerrors file is empty .

I have a similar machine probably I will try just moving this disk there before
I try a clean install
