SUMMARY: EVA 5000 (HSV110) VCS code

Thanks to Martin Petder, Kris Chandrasekhar, Regis
Carlier, Walter North, and Alan Davis.

The general consensus was to get to 3.020. I was
reminded of all the other equipment revs that would
have to be upgraded as well, documented in the VCS
release notes. Only Alan Davis has a bad experience
with any rev.

You should definitely upgrade to 3020. In the last 18
months I've rebuilt 2 EVA5K's from the uninitialized
state due to simple disk failures Aggravated by
controller software bugs.

The only reason that I didn't lose the data on the
storage system in Each case is that I have a 2nd
storage system, either another EVA or and HSG, that I
mirror the data on.

A 3rd incident of disk failure caused one of the
cabinets to fail but removing the offending disk and
restarting both controllers brought the cabinet back
online. The LSM mirroring and VMS volume shadowing
rebuilt the mirrors.

I would strongly recommend that if you are going to
continue using EVA's in production that you consider
getting a second one and mirroring your data.

Kris @ HP was also helpful in determining whether I
needed to upgrade the revision of any of my hard drive
firmware. I gave him drive information including
model, size, speed, and fw, and he determined that my
146GB drive FW would also need to be updated…..”the
combination of EVA VCS 3.020 and
the current version of the disk drive firmware are
known to be reasonably stable”.

The 146 GB FC 1" 10K rpm drive model number BD14655B2A
needs to be upgraded from HP03 to HP05. Talk to your
local Field Service person
about the upgrade if you have a service contract. The
FS person will have the dsk drive firmware upgrade
software. It won't take
a lot of EVA downtime for FS to do this. It can be
done without downtime but the process will take a very
very long time.

Of course the VCS 2.x to VCS 3.x to VCS 3.020 is also
not trivial. especially since you have Windows,
drivers, secure path, command view, lots of things
have to be updated.

Kris.
