SCSI noise

Hello Managers,

This is a pre-emptive time-saving question:

Will an XP1000 boot + run from an IDE disk? I've reluctantly noted a
decrease in my hearing in the last couple years, and have consequently
declared war on SCSI whine and noise in general in my work room. I've
already moved my server out of the room, figuring that quieting it is a lost
cause. But I'd like to keep a couple alphas close at hand for many years to
come, and was thinking that maybe some of the smaller machines might be more
easily quieted.

Also: Has anyone tried replacing either an XP1000 or a Personal Workstation
power supply with a (modified) non-compaq (e.g. modern and quiet) PS? Is
that even possible? I have a variety of digital personal workstations I
could use instead of my XP1000 if they are more amenable to this sort of
thing.

BTW I'm open to ideas in general about how to quiet alphas.

Mike
