I found the above message at the end of /var/adm/message of a machine of
mine (Alpha 255 with OS version 4.0g). Is it something I should worry
about ?
I switched off the machine with all the others last week before a
scheduled power outage.
The machine has no console screen attached (I usually use it from my other
twin Alpha 255 via rlogin, or get an X screen using VNC), therefore I
usually turn it on, wait a bit, type "boot" on the keyboard (the kbd LEDS
blink), wait a bit and then ping it.
Last week it did not respond to such ping (although the network card was
OK as shown by its blinking LEDs). Sometimes it happen after a cold start,
in this case usually pressing the reset button and rebooting cures it.
However last week the machine did not come up after repeated attempts.
What I tried then was to stop my main machine, in order to use its screen
(which is working !), and connected it to the faulty machine. At the time
I did not get any signal on the screen (not the boot prompt, not even the
check codes which come before it).
I then had to go away and do other things. Today I tried to switch on the
machine and boot it (blindly, no screen), and it came up at the first
attempt.
The only "strangeness" I could find are the
Jun 24 18:07:46 ouranos vmunix: WARNING: iget, dinode no. 2 changed
message at the end of today's boot
and a corrupted entry in the binary error log.
>From /var/adm/messages it actually appears a successful boot was done
last week after the power outage !
Anything else I could check ? Or shall I just say "not reproducible errors
will be considered as not occurred" ?
The only other thing I can say is that the temperature is now much better
than last week (also we have air conditioning on, which was one of the
reason for the scheduled power outage).
