At least partially I can answer my own question:

The particular node was incorrectly booted using the
/genvmunix kernel instead of /vmunix.

When booted with /vmunix , the tun[01] devices are
there, and things work fine...

Betreff: Missing tun0 and tun1 devices ?

Hi managers,

I have found that one of our DS-10 (Tru64 5.1B) machines is suddenly missing the tun0 and tun1 devices which are present on all the other machines.

This problem was noticed because the middleware to our application stopped running on this machine, apparently with a network problem.

Does anybody have a reference to the exact function of these interfaces? I could not find such in the manual pages nor in the documentation set. I also searched another (healthy) machine for configuration info regarding tun0, and found none.
I know we do not configure anything about these interfaces ourselves - they are simply there (usually).

What could happen to make them disappear? (other network interfaces seem to be well-connected and functioning properly...)

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Michael Bütow
