Strange network problems

Managers, we are perplexed by a strange network issue. Using netstat we
collect network statistics for our interfaces on some hosts. We
regularly see periods of 0 incoming packets during high traffic times.
As well we receive errors in some of our application logs that would
denote small periods of network downtime. The switches do not show that
any network re-negotiations occurred nor does the messages file however
we are beginning to suspect buggy drivers or network cards (de504).

Now, the most strange thing, we implemented a small ping script to try
and determine when we lose packets/interface and we found the problems
disappeared.
