swapon and memory

Again thanks for the replies - the consensus is that I am still not
provinding enough info. To rectify that, here is vmstat showing what
happens at the point of application crash. The memory-hungry app goes up
and down at about the point 619 appears in the cow column. top is too slow
to capture the event.
