Many thanks for the many responses to this.
Most suggestions involved variants on the syntax of the
command, and many suggested trying
hwmgr -del scsi -did 41
None of these variants worked unfortunately.
Martin Petder and Tom Blinn assure me all will be well
after the next reboot, so I guess I'll go back to sleep
until then.
