Load average interpretation

Hi managers,

I have a strange problem on tru64 5.1a boxes - when compilling from
sources using native cc compiler, sometimes the load goes extremely high
(usually between 100 a 150). It concerns only compilation of some sources
(e.g. heimdal kerberos), not all (for example compiling openssh gives load
only about 5). Thme machine has normal response times, but on the load
average depends other services, like sendmail.

What can cause this behavior ? C-preprocessor on code ? Or something else
?

How is it possible that load is so high even when cpu idles are still over
50% ?

I haven't seen this on old good 4.0d boxes :-)

All patchkits installed, no luck to find more on web to this, so any help
and suggestion is highly appreciated :-)

Thanks in advance,
