thanks to all who have replied, namely Nick Hill, Russ Schaefer, John Nebel,
Walter North, Benjamin C. Ingwersen, Jeffrey Hummel, Alan Rollow and Pat O'Brien
Alan pointed out that the 8400 was initially not available with a EV6. But there
were upgrade options marketed beginning at around 1999.

Upgrading the system I have involves either the upgrade kit or the necessary
components that comprises the kit. At least the clock module is to be replaced
if I want to upgrade to a CPU module not less than 440MHz.
While checking out what are the right steps to upgrade I learned a lot of the
hardware basics (module names and purpose) and now I'm able to identify, what
has to be done.
John, Nick, Walter, Jeffrey and Pat recommended the EV6 if prices are
reasonable. Jeffrey had no problems with the EV6 whereas Pat remarked, that
after an upgrade to EV6 one should be careful to boot off genvmunix. The CPU
modules have to be of the same type and clock (all EV6 or all EV56 ...) and the
same console version.
Jeff were in doubt about my PCI cage. I checked again, couldn't find a PN and
used the PN of the motherboard. Thus it reveals that the PCI cage is a DWLPB
that is perfectly supported even with the EV6 modules.
Right now I'm in the process of checking all the quotations. There are quite a
lot of companies dealing with this type of hardware, new or used/refurb ;-)
