Is there a way to see the scripts a patch kit executes?

I upgraded a machine from 51A to 51B this weekend. After this was completed
I applied Patch kit 3. After the patch kit my /etc/protocols file was only
readable by root. This can cause some bizarre problems with telnet, ftp ,
LDAP....

I would like to do further investigation by looking at the patchkit, but
the files seem to be in binary, is there a utility that will allow me to
read them?
