Thanx to Dr. Blinn for his quick and, as always, insightfull response which follows:
It's not actively used once you're done patching the system.
It might be prudent to back it up (tar should work OK for the part of the file system involved), or even move the content to a different file system if you've got the free space (I'd make a fileset in some AdvFS domain with excess space, copy the contents into that fileset, then clean out the directory and use it as a mount point for the fileset, but you could do whatever you are comfortable doing). Getting it out of your /var file system makes huge sense.
