Tape Problem

Morning all,

I have a DLT8000 device connected to an E40 and can't seem to get it
right for operation.

The SRM >> show dev returns:
MZA51800.518.0.2004.1 MZA51800 Compaq DLT8000 0250
Some output from hwmgr:

# hwmgr view dev
HWID: Device Name Mfg Model Location

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    4: /dev/kevm
   20: /dev/disk/dsk0c i2o_bs iop-0-tid-521
   52: /dev/disk/floppy0c 3.5in floppy fdi0-unit-0
   57: /dev/disk/cdrom0c COMPAQ CRD-8402B bus-1-targ-0-lun-0

# hwmgr -show scsi

SCSI DEVICE DEVICE DRIVER NUM DEVICE FIRST
HWID: DEVICEID HOSTNAME TYPE SUBTYPE OWNER PATH FILE
VALID PATH
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
   57: 1 afcp-dev cdrom none 0
1 cdrom0 [1/0/0]
   58: 0 afcp-dev tape none
 0 1 (null)

Trying a:
mt -f /dev/ntape/tape* returns not found

Then when I try :
# cd /dev/ntape
# ls
tape0 tape0_d1 tape0_d3 tape0_d5 tape0_d7 tape4_d1
tape0_d0 tape0_d2 tape0_d4 tape0_d6 tape0c
# mt -f /dev/ntape/tape4_d1 status

devget ioctl failed!
#

The ioctl failure is the only message returned from doing a mt status on
ALL devices listed in /dev/ntape or /dev/tape .
Obviously the tape drive is noticed by the bios, and hwmgr sees it, but
their isn't a path to the file or scsi id. In ddr.dbase the drive is
listed and referenced. So would I use a "makedev" structure and place it
in /dev/ntape?
The tape unit is connected to one of three scsi slots on a single card,
movement of the cable to each of the three connectors yields no change in
the above command results.

Kind of a rough day, now the machine can't find (kernel) vmunix on reboot.

TIA !
