Well it's unanimous, I've lost my marbles!
Tru64 tar has always behaved this way and the error message
I reported comes out of Solaris (spit, sorry).

Thanks to all who responded especially to Trevor Osatchuk
who directed me to a vendor of top quality replacement marbles :)
